Master djembefola Sidiki Dembélé hails from Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, and was born into a Griot family. Griots are the keepers of anything cultural and have a supreme level musical tradition. Unsurprisingly therefore, Dembélé started playing percussion professionally when he was fourtien and started his own succesful band, Denifari, by the time he was sixteen. Apart from the djembe he is also a very talented balafon and ngoni player.
In 2007 he was selected from the top djembefolas of Cote d’Ivoire to be the lead percussionist in the circus Afrika! Afrika!. He toured with them for years. In 2009 he moved to Britain where he still lives. From his home in Manchester he travels the world to teach and perform. He also tours with the prestigious UK group Ballet Nimba. On top of all that, he is also a really nice guy. Our Daan met him during a workshop in Dublin, Ireland in 2015 and therefore knows that he is a fantastic teacher. And this year he will be teaching at Tuka Tuka and we’re proud of it!
